DJ SELF is the Entertainment Industry’s premier DJ, his name is synonymous with what’s happening in Hip Hop today. SELF popularity grew so big in New York City clubs that he was coined the handle “The Prince of NY” in which he has earned the respect of not only other DJ’s around the world but of the Hip Hop community as a whole. Today’s most in demand DJ as well as a fixture in the night life scene, SELF spins at the hottest NYC & NJ night clubs 6 days a week. Currently SELF has residencies at NYC hot night clubs Strata on Friday nights and live on stage at BB Kings on Saturday nights – each packed weekly with over 1000 partygoers. SELF continues to be highly requested to rock the most talked about album release parties, celebrity birthdays, concerts and other high profile events. Over the years SELF has developed a brilliance and maturity of style that is prolific and influential. He is not known just for the way he orchestrates the records to keep the floor packed or for breaking a new album – he is highly regarded as an MC, Master of Ceremony. SELF learned voraciously from other DJ’s before his time and has transcended the style of DJing & MCing to another level.
Since 1996 DJ Self has been branding his fiery brand of Hip Hop to the masses. Born and raised in Fort Greene, Brooklyn during Hip Hop’s golden era, and currently holding it down in the BX, Self has risen up in the ranks of club, party, and mixtapes DJ’s to emerge among the elite; and was recently rated top 3 club DJ in NYC. Leveraging off his position and experience in the game, SELF co-founded a DJ Crew called “DA Union”. There is not a night in NYC that DJ SELF or a member of the Da Union is not playing at one of most popular night clubs. Da Union, now a renowned brand, consists of a team of DJ’s that specialize in hiphop, reggae, r&b, and pop, as well as consistent production of mixtapes. The Prince of NY alone, is responsible for a series of mixtapes that have set the streets on fire. For over 7 years SELF has continuously dropped jewels, selling thousands of mix tapes that feature hot exclusives from Hip-Hop and R&B’s finest. Among the highlights the underground classic Rawkus Mixtape, #1 selling Lox Family Volume 1, Young Jeezy Street Certified Volume 1 & 2, and R&B Cookies. DJ SELF has evolved into such a prominent brand in the Hip Hop community that Adidas created a limited edition sneaker featuring him and another sneaker featuring his DJ crew Da Union. In addition, throughout his career he has been tapped by urban clothing companies like Cavi, Nostic, and Eight732 to showcase their lines as he rocks parties & events.
Since 1998 he’s taken the party to the next level in clubs and venues world wide including appearances in Berlin, London, Germany, Tokyo, Mexico, Caribbean, Chicago, St Louis, Seattle and throughout the East Coast. In addition he’s provided entertainment at exclusive industry events, i.e parties for King magazine, XXL,and Dons & Divas – album release events for Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, Jadakiss, Amerie, Busta Rhymes, Camron, Jim Jones, Missy Elliot, Lloyd Banks, Trick Daddy and Truth Hurts – birthday celebrations for Carl Thomas, Stephon Marbury, Fabolous, Tracy McGrady, Young Jeezy, Juelz Santana, Zab Judah & Mos Def.. Self’s association with Mos runs deep. Self provided the tunes at the star studded closing party for the Pulitzer winning Top Dog Under Dog (which starred Mos and Jeffery Wright),was the tour DJ in 2002-2003 for Mos’s Black Jack Johnson and got the crowd going when Mos hosted MTV2’s Hampton’s Party in 2003. Self has also hit the road for Charli Baltimore, The Rap Pages Tour and has made several appearances on BET’s 106 & Park,Rap City Basement (with Big Tigga) and Wendy Williams top rated radio show on WBLS.
Few years ago, a magazine writer asked SELF “You have the clubs on lock, what’s next?” SELF responded “I need to be on that Box” (referring to radio). So DJ SELF set on a mission to become a Mixshow DJ on one of NYC’s top radio stations – the mecca of Hip Hop. Being a DJ of the People and aware of the politics such a move would take, SELF started his campaign in the very same nightclubs and streets that helped him endure the fame he presently obtained. Although his ultimate goal would not come easy – the emergence of Satellite radio landed SELF his very own Mixshow on Sirius Satellite’s HipHop Nation Ch-40 coined “VIP Saturdays” 10pm-12pm. After receiving great ratings with his show over couple years – SELF was able to prove not only was he a hot club DJ, but was just as captivating on the airwaves. An economical move causing the merger of Sirius and XM satellite stations left SELF show in limbo, but was short lived as Eminem quickly decided not only to add “VIP Saturdays” to Shade 45 but to extend the show an extra hour, now Saturdays 10pm-1am. Shortly there after a radio station came looking for the next big thing – being a DJ that had NYC clubs on lock and credible track record on the airwaves, SELF was the solution. DJ SELF “The Prince of NY” joined the family of WWPR Power 105.1 Mixshow DJ’s in November 2008. Listeners can hear him live on Fridays 10pm-12pm and Saturdays 6pm-10pm. Emerging as the young Prince of Power 105.1, you can also catch DJ SELF hosting Power 105.1’s series of “R&B Live” showcase’s as well as the annual Power House concert.
From the streets to the clubs to the airwaves, DJ Self is making moves & providing the soundtrack for the good times.
